Documentation

StudyBuddy turns your Schoology grades into something you can actually read - and adds a calendar, a to-do list, grade analytics, and SAT/AP practice on top. Here's how everything works.

What is StudyBuddy?

StudyBuddy is a cleaner, faster way to see your Schoology grades. Instead of digging through Schoology's interface, StudyBuddy presents everything in one quiet, organized place - on the web, on iPhone, and on Android. With StudyBuddy you can:

  • See every course grade at a glance, then open a course for the full breakdown
  • Play out "what-if" scenarios to figure out what you need on upcoming work
  • See all your due dates in one calendar across every class
  • Get a sorted to-do list of what's overdue, due today, and coming up
  • Spot your strongest and weakest categories with analytics
  • Practice for the SAT (and, soon, AP exams) with instant feedback

Your data stays yours. StudyBuddy connects to Schoology with secure sign-in (OAuth) - we never see or store your password. Your grades are fetched fresh from Schoology and shown to you; they're never saved in a database. See the Privacy Policy for the details.

StudyBuddy is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Schoology or PowerSchool.

Getting Started

1

Open StudyBuddy

Open StudyBuddy in your browser, or install the iPhone or Android app (see the Mobile App section). From the landing page, choose Log in to get started. You don't need to create an account first - your StudyBuddy account is set up automatically the first time you sign in.

2

Find your school

Start typing your school, district, or state in the search box and pick your school from the list. This tells StudyBuddy which Schoology to send you to. If you can't find your school, let us know and we'll add it.

3

Sign in with Schoology

A Schoology sign-in window opens. Log in with your usual Schoology username and password - this all happens on Schoology's own site. If your browser blocks the window, allow popups and try again.

Security note: StudyBuddy uses OAuth, so your password stays with Schoology. We only receive permission to read your grades - nothing more.

4

Close the window & you're in

Once you've signed in, close the Schoology window. StudyBuddy finishes up and drops you straight onto your grades dashboard with all your courses ready to go.

Getting Around

On the web, the sidebar on the left is your main menu. On mobile, the same destinations live in the bottom navigation bar. You'll find:

  • Grades - all your courses and their full breakdowns
  • Calendar - every assignment due date in one view
  • To-do / Overdue - what needs attention, sorted for you (with a badge counting overdue work)
  • Analytics - trends, weak spots, and grade insights
  • SAT Prep - practice sessions with instant feedback
  • AP Practice - coming soon

💡 Handy extras

  • Search (the magnifying glass near the logo) jumps to any course or assignment by name.
  • • Your profile menu (bottom of the sidebar) holds the light/dark theme switch, links to Privacy, Contact, and these Docs, and the Sign out button.

Viewing Your Grades

Your courses

The Grades page shows a card for every course. Each card displays:

  • Course name - your class title
  • Current grade - your overall grade as a letter and percentage
  • Assignment count - how many assignments the course has

Across the top you'll also see quick totals - how many courses and assignments you have, and how many assignments are overdue or due today. Use the refresh button to pull the latest grades from Schoology at any time (on mobile, pull down to refresh).

Course details

Click any course card to open its detail page, where you'll see:

  • Overall course grade - front and center at the top
  • Categories - each grading category (Tests, Homework, etc.) and its weight
  • Category grades - how you're doing in each one
  • Assignments - every assignment within each category
  • Assignment grades - points earned and the percentage for each
  • Due dates - when each assignment was or is due

💡 Tips

  • • Click a course card to open its full breakdown.
  • • Expand and collapse categories to focus on one part of a class.
  • • Assignment links open the original assignment in Schoology.
  • • Hit refresh whenever you want the very latest grades.

What-If Mode

What-If Mode lets you see how hypothetical grades would change your overall course grade - perfect for planning ahead and figuring out exactly what you need on upcoming work.

It's just a sandbox. What-If calculations happen entirely on your device and are never sent to Schoology or saved on our servers. Your real grades never change.

How to use What-If Mode

1

Turn on What-If Mode

Open any course and switch on What-If Mode. The interface shifts to a What-If theme so you always know you're working with hypothetical numbers.

2

Edit existing grades

Click any assignment score to change it. Your category and course grades update instantly as you type.

3

Add hypothetical assignments

Add a brand-new assignment to any category with a score and max points to see how a future test or project would land.

4

Drop assignments

Drop any assignment to see your grade without it - handy for classes that drop your lowest score.

5

Solve for a target grade

Tell StudyBuddy the grade you're aiming for and it works out the average you'd need on your remaining work to get there.

6

Reset or exit

Reset to clear your changes while staying in What-If Mode, or exit to return to your real grades. Your What-If changes are remembered on your device per course until you reset them.

Common use cases

  • • "What grade do I need on the final to get an A in this class?"
  • • "If I get 100% on the next three assignments, what will my grade be?"
  • • "What if the teacher drops my lowest quiz score?"
  • • "How much will this missing assignment hurt my grade?"

Calendar

The Calendar shows every assignment due date across all your courses in one view, so you can see what's coming and plan your week. Open it from Calendar in the sidebar (or the bottom bar on mobile).

Calendar features

  • Color coding: each course has its own color, so you can tell at a glance which class an assignment belongs to.
  • Month & week views: switch between month and week to zoom in or out on your schedule.
  • Clickable assignments: click any assignment to open it directly in Schoology.

To-do & Overdue

The To-do / Overdue page is your single sorted list of what needs doing, pulled from every class and grouped into three sections:

  • Overdue - past-due assignments that still need attention
  • Due today - everything on today's plate
  • Upcoming - what's on the way

Each item shows the assignment, its course and category, and when it's due. Click an assignment to open it in Schoology. The badge next to To-do / Overdue in the menu always shows how many assignments are overdue, and the list rolls over automatically at midnight.

Analytics

The Analytics page reads across all your courses to surface patterns you'd otherwise miss. At a glance you can see:

  • Your average across every course, and the spread from your highest to lowest class
  • Which courses and categories need attention (the ones slipping below the line)
  • Grade trends per course, so you can tell what's climbing and what's sliding
  • Where you can recover the most points - assignments and categories with the most room to grow
  • How much of your grade is actually graded yet, so you know how solid each number is

It's all calculated from the grades already on your device - nothing extra is sent anywhere.

SAT & AP Practice

SAT Prep

SAT Preplets you practice the Math and Reading & Writing sections with instant feedback. As you practice, StudyBuddy tracks how much of each section you've mastered and gives you a projected total SAT score. A streak counter keeps track of how many days in a row you've practiced - keep it alive to build the habit.

AP Practice

AP Practice - multiple-choice and free-response practice for AP courses with per-unit mastery and predicted scores - is on the way. The menu item is there now and shows a "coming soon" note; we'll switch it on once it's ready.

Mobile App

StudyBuddy is available on iPhone and Android in addition to the web. The app has all the same features - grades, What-If, calendar, to-do, analytics, and SAT prep - and you sign in the same way. Everything stays in sync, so you can check a grade on your phone and pick up where you left off on your laptop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to create an account?

No separate sign-up needed. Just sign in with Schoology - your StudyBuddy account is created automatically the first time you log in.

Why do I need to log in with Schoology?

StudyBuddy needs permission to read your grades from Schoology. We use OAuth - the same kind of secure sign-in used by major apps - so you log in on Schoology's own site and your password stays with Schoology.

Is my password stored?

No, absolutely not. You log in directly on Schoology's website. We only receive a secure token that lets us read your grades - we never see or store your password.

Are my grades stored on your servers?

No. Your grades are fetched fresh from Schoology each time and shown to you - they're never saved in a database. The only thing we keep is a session token (so you stay logged in), which expires automatically and is deleted the moment you sign out. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.

How do I get the latest grades?

StudyBuddy pulls your data live from Schoology. Use the refresh button (or pull down on mobile) any time you want to grab the newest grades and assignments.

Why aren't all my courses showing?

StudyBuddy only shows courses that have grades available in Schoology. If a course is missing, it might be because:

  • The teacher hasn't posted any grades yet
  • The course isn't set up for grading in Schoology
  • You're not enrolled as a student in that course

Do What-If calculations affect my real grades?

No, never. What-If Mode is completely local to your device. Nothing is sent to Schoology or saved on our servers, and your actual grades stay exactly as they are. Think of it as a planning calculator.

Is there a mobile app?

Yes - StudyBuddy is on both iPhone and Android. It has the same features as the web app and stays in sync across your devices.

Can teachers see that I'm using StudyBuddy?

No. StudyBuddy only reads your grades from Schoology. Teachers can't see that you're using StudyBuddy or anything you do with the What-If calculator.

How do I sign out or revoke access?

Open your profile menu and choose Sign out - that ends your session right away. To fully revoke access later, go to your Schoology account settings and remove StudyBuddy from your connected apps.

What if I find a bug or have a feature request?

We'd love to hear from you! Head to our contact page to report issues or suggest features.

Is StudyBuddy free?

Yes! StudyBuddy is completely free for students - no premium tiers or hidden costs.
